Topperschlosschen-The Tiniest Castle of All
Tauber Valley, Rothenburg, Germany-
Tucked away in the quiet Tauber Valley below Rothenburg ob der Tauber stands the enchanting Toppler Castle—a charming medieval tower that looks like it’s straight out of a storybook. Built around 1388 by Heinrich Toppler, Rothenburg’s powerful and visionary mayor, it is rumored that he escaped there with his buddies to gamble and play cards. From this high perch, the gamblers had a perfect view of any approaching wives or other unwelcome persons, although this purported purpose can’t be confirmed.

Toppler was a remarkable figure who turned Rothenburg into one of the most prosperous free imperial cities of the Middle Ages. His name is still well known here in town, to this very day. His retreat, perched beside a tranquil stream, combines the sturdy base of a fortified structure with the quaint timber-framed upper floors typical of Franconian architecture.
Hiking to the castle down into the valley was strenuous for little Rudi but he enjoyed a cool drink from the Tauber River.

This surprisingly tiny castle can be seen from Rothenburg’s Castle Garden, when gazing down into the Tauber River Valley. Though it’s small in size, the castle’s design is ingenious—a blend of defense and domestic comfort. Formerly its timber-framed structure was visible but over the centuries it has been covered with stucco. Each story is connected by steep wooden steps (that Rudi decided not to climb) and has a room full of furnishings from the time period. Today, it remains privately owned but can be toured with reservations.
Visiting the Toppler Castle is like stepping back in time—into a world where mayors built moated hideaways and medieval charm lives on beneath the castle walls of Rothenburg.
